5 Myths That Prevent Job Seekers from Overcoming Failure
5 Myths That Prevent Job Seekers from Overcoming Failure5 Myths That Prevent Job Seekers from Overcoming Failure For many people, the job search is a mysterious and frustrating process. Unless youre a recruiter or hiring manager , you usually dont have a good idea of what goes on behind the scenes - and because of that, people tend to come up with their own ideas of what happens, and what it takes to be successful.Often, this works like a game of telephone You may start out with a grain of truth, but it will get repeated and altered so many times that it ends up being completely misinterpreted. As a result, buying into these common sense ideas and pieces of advice can actually end up hurting your chances of scoring your dream job.So if youve been hearing rejection after rejection lately - or worse, no responses at all - its time to set things straight. Read up on the most pervasive job search myths out there, what the facts of the matter are and how you can tweak your job search for better results. So many job seekers think their odds of hearing back are directly proportional to how many times they blast their resume out to recruiters. There is some merit to the idea that youll need to apply to multiple opportunities, but taking a total spray-and-pray approach is one of the worst things you can do.While applying to more jobs does increase potenzial callbacks, remember elend to sacrifice quality for quantity. Recruiters will quickly trash applications that are generic or a poor fit, says Christopher K. Lee, Career Consultant and founder of Purpose Redeemed .Instead, you should focus your job search on jobs you really want, and jobs where you compete against the best applicants in the pool, adds career concierge and hiring consultant Kim Stiens of Ranavain .And if you really want to stand out, customize each application you submit, says Cheryl E. Palmer, Executive Career Coach and owner of Call to Career .Carefully review the vacancy annou ncements for different positions and then tailor your titelseite letter accordingly so that you can convince a hiring manager that you are right for the job, Palmer recommends. On the opposite end of the spectrum, some job seekers are hesitant to apply to any job with a description that doesnt match their skills and experience 100 percent. Many job seekers refrain from applying to positions where they dont meet all the listed qualifications . This is a shame because some of them would excel in those roles, says Lee. Truth is, job requirements are often a wish list. Few applicants will meet all the points.A good rule of thumb if you match at least 75-80 percent of the requirements, its worth applying.Speak to how strong you are in the other areas, and highlight any areas of experience which demonstrate youll be able to pick up the lacking skill quickly, recommends business coach Dave Labowitz .While qualifications are important, theyre only part of the equation.Too many job seekers b elieve they should get the job because they have experience. Yes, experience is important, but it doesnt help you stand out, says career coach and resume writer Melanie L. Denny . Rather than simply assuming youll get the job due to your stellar track record, focus on the value you have produced for past employers in the gestalt of achievements, she recommends.Another reason hiring managers may choose a less qualified candidate is if they prove to be a better culture fit . If you have all of the necessary skills, but dont seem like you could work well with others at the company, thats a big red flag. One way to combat this is by only applying to companies that you know you would be compatible with. But if youve already found a good match, you can prove youre a good culture fit in your application materials - particularly your cover letter. Which leads us to myth number fourSure, not every recruiter or hiring manager will read a cover letter - but enough do that its still worth taking the time to write one, says Stiens. While some hiring managers dont read them, a lot still do, and for those hiring managers, your cover letter is at least as important as your resume. While a resume is a fairly rote, formulaic document, cover letters are your place to show your personality and show how you operate on the job, she explains.Cover letters can especially help demonstrate the oh-so-important aforementioned culture fit. With todays companies caring far more about cultural fit than ever before, a cover letter is your opportunity to show them who you are, not just what youve done. This will differentiate you from other applicants and increase the likelihood of an interview, Labowitz says.To demonstrate that culture fit, share relevant anecdotes from your career.Soft skills are key, and using anecdotes in your cover letter are the most effective way to demonstrate them in an application, Stiens recommends. And remember - no one-size-fits-all cover letters. You should submit unique, custom cover letters for each job you apply to (though you can certainly recycle material and anecdotes that are relevant to multiple jobs). So you satisfy most of the job requirements and have a great resume and cover letter that share what you could bring to the company that other candidates couldnt. And yet, you still arent hearing back from recruiters. What gives?Several of my clients think having a strong resume is enough to get them the job but if you dont get that resume in front of the right person (your potential future boss) and sell yourself in an interview, you wont be hired, Denny says. Make sure you are strategic about marketing yourself and master the art of selling your value to a hiring manager. The best way to do that, experts agree, is to network . If you know somebody at a company you want to apply to, ask if theyd be comfortable referring you. If you dont know anybody at the company, look online to see who you can connect with and send them a frien dly email or LinkedIn message requesting an informational interview. If all goes well, you can ask them for a referral.Dont get too in your head about who you should be connecting with. Some job seekers think I cant reach out to people I worked with 10 years ago and havent spoken with since then - it would be an imposition, says Career/Executive Coach Tammy Gooler Loeb . But put yourself in their shoes. If this person reached out to you after 10 years, would you feel imposed on or flattered that they contacted you? More often the latter, and youd likely be happy to do anything you can to be helpful to them, she points out.And dont hesitate to connect with somebody just because theyre not directly recruiting or hiring for the role. Most people find their next meaningful role through a third-, fourth- or fifth-degree connection and how they reached that point may likely have been through a string of connections that are not necessarily in your industry or doing a role similar to your s, Gooler Loeb says. Think of those people you know who seem to know everybody and ask them who they know may be good people for you to speak with to learn more about companies that are growing or hiring.

Before hiring a new employee, be sure they have these 5 traits
Before hiring a new employee, be sure they have these 5 traitsBefore hiring a new employee, be sure they have these 5 traitsWhen building yur team, there is nothing more important than hiring someone who not only is good at what they do but who is also going to mesh well with both the rest of your employees and your clients/customers. A business is nothing without its employees. And in my 14 years of owning a business, great employees have helped mydigital absatzwirtschaft agencybecome what it is today. When an employee moves on or we look to expand, these are the five qualities I look for in a hireAdaptabilityDigital marketing is a fast-paced field. You need to be constantly evolving and ready to research and learn on your own. This means having the right mindset to want to learn and change and put new skills to the test. If you dont have this spark and flexibility, you wont last long in marketing.ResourcefulnessMarketing is a fast-paced environment. And when you have multiple client s and multiple responsibilities, being able to manage your time is essential A good hire will have proven time management skills and be able to accomplish his or her tasks on time and with little-to-no supervision.A keen eye for the small stuffYou want someone who is detail oriented. Whether its reading an article 50 times, making 20 revisions on a website or simply paying attention to the colors and logo specs for a clients brochure, a good hire is detail oriented. It doesnt matter the job responsibilities or position title details are crucial to any business. Noticing details starts with the hiring process. Ill often get resumes with grammatical errors or even worse, spelling errors. Those go immediately in the trash. If a potential employee doesnt care enough to put their best foot forward for a possible future boss, why would they for a client down the road?Multi-tasking abilityMost companies these days are looking for someone whos not afraid to work outside their job descriptio ns. My agency is no different. Weve worked to break down silos between departments so our employees can have a holistic view of the entire marketing process. Along with this, in marketing, every client will have unique needs for their business goalsand youll have to learn to meet those goals. I look for hires with an ability to juggle tasks effectively without letting any drop.OpennessCulture fit is critical. This is key for both how the hire interacts with your team and how he or she interacts with current and potential clients. If a person doesnt gel with my team or cant handle talking with clients, its a sign they might not work out with job long term. At my agency, we utilize a trial period to ensure our new hires are slam dunks. During our introductory period, if it seems like the employee doesnt fit our culture, has difficulty interacting with clients or perhaps the employee just didnt like the work, we can part ways. What to Do When a Job Candidate Ghosts You
What to Do When a Job Candidate Ghosts YouWhat to Do When a Job Candidate Ghosts YouThe job seekers profile is perfect. And in your first in-person meeting with the candidate, the two of you seemed to click. But since the interview, you havent heard a peep, even though youve sent several messages and even tried calling. Welcome to the frustrating world of candidate ghosting. The dating world coined the word ghosting to describe when a person abruptly cuts off all contact and seems to vanish from the face of the earth with no explanation. In the professional realm, this scenario is increasingly common as well. district president Josh Howarth said theres been a 10 to 20 percent increase in ghosting over the past year.To avoid being ghosted during the hiring process, you need to first understand this trend. Why job candidates ghostTo some extent, the rise of professional ghosting is due to a general erosion of once-sacrosanct etiquette standards. Many of todays job seekers would rather av oid confrontation and awkwardness than deliver bad news. You could also call it payback or karma, as hiring managers have long been known to ghost people after interviews. But the main explanation is that workers simply have mora choices today. In the current market, managers are struggling to fill vacancies while skilled candidates often field multiple job offers. With so many options, candidates simply may not care whether they burn a few bridges along the way. This is particularly true among entry-level positions with lower wages.Additionally, workers care about corporate culture when seeking employment. If a candidate feels your companys values dont align with their preferences, they may simply stop communicating with you and focus on other potential employers instead.HIRING? FIND TOP TALENT NOWHow to avoid being ghosted by job candidatesShould you just shrug your shoulders and consider that ghosting is the new normal? Not necessarily. Here are some steps you can take to reduce y our chances of being ghosted by job seekers.Streamline your hiring process. Other employers are likely courting your dream applicants as well, so you need to make your move quickly. Interview your top candidates right away rather than waiting for a critical mass before you bring them all in.Play by the Golden Rule. Ghosting works both ways. You dont like it, and neither do job seekers. When you treat them with respect, your company will gain a reputation for being considerate and professional. So, make it a point to communicate promptly with all candidates - not just the ones youre interested in hiring. People talk.Make an offer they cant refuse. With record-low unemployment rates, you dont have the luxury of lowballing the salary, even if youre willing to negotiate it higher. You can avoid turning off your top pick if you extend above-average compensation right away. A sign-on bonus, telecommuting option and other top perks would sweeten the deal.Use alternative forms of communica tion. Some millennials and Gen Zers dont check schmelzglas often. And they are unlikely to take a phone call from an unknown number. If youre having trouble reaching interviewees, send them a text message instead.Craft messages that encourage a response. Win interviewees back to the table with persuasive language. Personalize the communication by mentioning what you admire about their skill set and how theyd be a valuable addition to your team. End the message with specific next steps, such as Id like to schedule a follow-up meeting for later this week to discuss the job offer and a possible start date.As long as skilled candidates have the upper hand, employers run the risk of being ghosted. The key is to treat job seekers fairly and with respect, and then hope they have the courtesy of doing the same.

Is it Age Discrimination, or Are You an Angry Old Fart
Is it Age Discrimination, or Are You an Angry Old FartIs it Age Discrimination, or Are You an Angry Old Fart?Is it Age Discrimination, or Are You an Angry Old FartAge discrimination is a very real phenomenon that can mean longer periods of unemployment for older workers, along with the frustration and depression that so often follow. An organization that routinely avoids hiring people older than 40, 50, 60or any arbitrary cutoff pointis probably breaking the law (but good luck proving it). Still, its a huge mistake to assume that, just because youve reached a certain birthday, age discrimination is the one and only reason youre not getting hired. In fact, its a copout an easy way to let yourself off the hook and shift all the blame to someone else. Sure, there are some bad apples. But most geschftsleben owners know that it costs far more to continually replace employees than to retain good ones. Its in their best interest to hire candidates with good skills and staying powerand stati stically, older workers win that race. So, could it be that your righteous indignation has turned you into an Angry Old Fart (or AOF)? If youve ever seen a comedy routine featuring ventriloquist Jeff Dunhams quintessential AOF character, the foul-mouthedWalter (pictured here), you know what I mean. An AOF is anyone (not necessarily old) whos grown so cynical and pissed off at the world that they walk around with a big chip on their shoulder. They can often be heard uttering things like, Thats not the way we used to do it Check the list below to see if you have any of these symptoms.10 Signs You May be an Angry Old FartYoure proud to be one of the purists who hasnt gotten swept up in all that new techno-cyber-mumbo-jumbo.Youre intent on getting another job just like your old job, even though you were the CEO of VCRs R Us.Youre mucksmuschenstill using the same obituary-style resume that worked so well for you in 89.You like to tell your interviewers that you were out working before they were even born. You list unique skills and experience on your resume, such as proficiency on the Commodore Home PC and Apple IIe.Youre still determined to get to the top of the proverbial corporate ladder, even though they re-organized, re-structured, and right-sized the ladder into more ofa horizontal plank back in the mid-90s.You havent taken a course or upgraded your skills since you got out of school. (Youre already an expert, so why should you?)You dress like youve always dressed, style your hair the way youve always styled your hair, and believe that bow ties are the height of fashion.Youre a name dropper who likes to impress people with stories like that time you were an extra in a crowd scene on Happy Days and met The Fonz. AyyyyYouve sent the same resume and cover letter to 400 employers, not one has called you for an interview, and youve concluded its age discrimination rather than ineffective career documents. If some of those sound familiar and youre having trouble connec ting with employers, take an honest look at yourself. If theres a chip on your shoulder, knock it off Keep building your support system, find new avenues of learning, network-network-network, and let go of the old rules and limitations that were keeping you angry and boxed in.Can you think of other symptoms of Angry Old Fart syndrome? 5 quick tips for dressing like you give a damn
5 quick tips for dressing like you give a damn5 quick tips for dressing like you give a damnMy shirt size was XL all through college, which was curious, because I was 511 and 170 lbs. sopping wet after indulging in Burrito Tuesdays and wearing a winter coat. In short, I was not remotely a size XL incollege. I wasnt within miles of a size XL. I was barely an L. I was a 100 percent stone-cold M, an inarguable fact that did not remotely stop me from purchasing XL shirts, mostly because I wasdesperately insecureabout my muscle-free frame, but also because, at the time, I had scant concept of what sizes meant. Now, as amarried fatherof two with the sporadic ability to purchase something mora than AerosmithGet a Grip93 Tour t-shirts and slightly more clothes shopping experience under my belt (also significant belt-shopping experience), I can safely say that I still have scant concept of what sizes mean. If you are like me, you are L but sometimes XL and occasionally M if you dont mind spend ing 12 hours striving to inhale your own stomach. My pant sizes span the breadth of many numbers in the 30s. I dont remotely know where to start with sport coats, which are jerks. Here are two things I know It has become clear that the articles aboutHow to Be a Militantly Well-Appointed Set of Italian Cheek boneshall never serve as consulting material. But I also know that leaving the house while being off by two sizes not only make me look like the original bassist from Alice in Chains, but makes it look like my wife is going out with the original bassist from Alice in Chains, and thats a negative outcome for both of us. Dressing like youre 23 and also homeless is unacceptable, but chances are fairly high that youre not Benedict Cumberbatch. (If you are, hey man, thanks for reading, super excited forInfinity War.) But there are a few things you can do to find the line between - and to show your significant other that youre making the effort.1. First, throw out everything in your cl oset.Well, not everything. But mostly everything. People who make stupid amounts of money on self-help Twitter accounts call this decluttering your holistic chakra living space and emotional joy reservoir. We just call it Throwing Out (Or Donating) a Bunch of Old S**t You Dont Need. Through several thousands of years of genetic programming, were built to develop patterns ordering the saatkorn coffee, playing the same playlists, wearing the same shirts. Mentally, its easier practically, its boring. Since were straightening things up anyway, take an afternoon to scrape out your closet, identify anything that you havent worn within the past year and deposit it into a Hefty lawn bag for Goodwill or charity bin outside Lowes. By Kondo-ing the bejesus out of your stuff, youre making room, sure. But more than that, youre mentally preparing to change things.2. Have someone smarter than you determine your sizes. If you do not know how to do this, find a tailor, which you will be able to do by asking your grandfather what a tailor is and then googling one in your town. (If youd care to do this while sipping an Orange Julius, you can also hit up an anchor store at a mall.) Get your numbers and stash them in your phone somewhere for easy retrieval. This way you start with a baseline of Actual Math Figures, instead of just slim fit or husky. And then3. Understand those actual math figures do not mean a damn thing. The apparel industry is screwing with you for its own enjoyment, because size numbers mean nothing. Size L means nothing. Slim Fit means less than nothing. Skinny Fit means something, but its usually Put This Down, You Have a Family, For Gods Sake. Sizes vary pathetically randomly, from town-to-town, from store-to-store, and sometimes, conveniently, within the same store, moreso if youre ordering online. If this sounds like it means you have to shop at various places over a span of time to figure out where youre a Slim Fit and where youre a 34 and where youre a 42 L or 40 R, yes. Assume zero consistency between sizes and cuts across stores. Women have been dealing with this for 400 years, so dont complain about it too much. Before you can do anything, you have to determine what fits. This might take a while.4. Get six outfits, and then wear them for no reason at all. With your closet freshened and Actual Size obtained- and in flagrant defiance of Jason Isbell - establish a handful of outfits from your appropriately fitting arsenal. And then, for no reason at all, wear one on a random Tuesday. And then on a Friday. And then some time that isnt a date night, or a special occasion, or when your wife isnt expecting you to. Just to do it, to show youre paying attention. The first few times may elicit raised eyebrows - as in, is everything okay? Have you been fired? Is there something we need to talk about regarding health or subpoenas? But after a while the upgrade will become a part of that daily programming, and be appreciated as such. Youre do ing this for her, but also5. Youre doing it for you.Look, no ones going to approximate Donald Glovers wardrobe with four more years of Honda payments to make. But cleaning yourself up and throwing on clothes that actually fit when its not required or expected - this is a small gesture, but one that reminds the person whos chosen to live with you that you care about yourself, you care about her, and youre good for making effort when not asked. Sometimes, that effort is all that matters. As long as it doesnt involve skinny jeans. This article was originally published on Fatherly.

Do You Want a Turn-Key Employee - Spark Hire
Do You Want a Turn-Key Employee - Spark HireWhen it comes to talent acquisition, experience is great. Experienced candidates become productive mora quickly, they often have insight from past employers, and in general they require a lot less break-in time. Like a move-in-ready house, turn-key employees have the experience to begin work in their new role almost immediately. But, should experience be the focus of your talent acquisition strategy? Hiring an inexperienced, but bright, candidate can also have its advantages. An inexperienced candidate is less likely to have plektrumed up bad habits, overconfidence, and preconceived notions of the way things are done.Last fall, Forbes posted an article to their website titled, Why Its Better to Hire the Least Qualified Person for the Job. The article discusses a study about the attitudes of new hires experienced and inexperienced. The study found that a less qualified employee might feel more grateful for the job, and be more motivated to d o well. A more experienced employee, on the other hand, could lack such a motivation. In fact, under-qualified employees in the study put in an average of 50% more effort on the job.Of course, effort cant always make up for lack of experience. I could try really hard to perform brain surgery, but thats not going to make up for lack of a medical degree. Less qualified candidates will still require more training than most experienced candidates adjusting for departmental and company basics. However, taking the time to train a new employee properly isnt all bad. It is a natural part of the talent acquisition process. Training also allows you the freedom to teach your new hire good habits, without worrying about re-training.In keeping with the house idea, think of an experienced employee as a move-in-ready house. Its great that you dont have to do much maybe just a new coat of paint. However, if everything isnt exactly the way you want it, making changes is more difficult. Inexperienced employees, on the other hand, can be thought of like model homes. You have to pick out all of the features, and maybe even pay for some extra upgrades, but you can put it together exactly how you want it.As if these perks werent enough, inexperienced employees also tend to have great loyalty to the employer who gave them their big break. Think of this attitude as the natural product of intensive training and the positive feelings described in the Forbes article. Less experienced employees are likely to be grateful, and loyal, to your company for providing them with a great new experience.Does your talent acquisition strategy focus on employee experience? A general guideline is to spend 80 percent of your time listening and only 20 percent talking.Take Notes While you wont want to transcribe everything the candidate says, do write down important points, key accomplishments, good examples and other information that will help you remember and fairly evaluate each candidate. An interview guide, prepared in advance, will make note-taking easier and give you a structure for capturing key information.Invite Candidates to Ask Questions This can be the most valuable part of the interview. Why do they want to be here is it the challenge of the job, advances in the industry or something specific about your company? Or is the candidate fixated on salary, benefits and time off? If the candidate has no questions, this should be a red flag, especially for senior-level employees. Make a note of what the candidate asks, and be sure to follow up if you cant provide the answer immediately.Follow Legal Interviewing Guidelines It is critically important that every interviewer at your company, from HR clerks to top executives, understand and follow legal hiring guidelines. The easiest way to keep your interviews fully compliant is to ask only questions that relate to the job, eliminating the potential for bias by not introducing questions or scenarios that will elicit irrelevant information. After the InterviewLet Candidates Know What They Can Expect A pet peeve of many job seekers is that they are left hanging after an interview, or they are promised follow-up that never comes. If the candidate is a good fit, be clear about what the next steps will be. And if the candidate is not a good fit? Always end the interview on a positive note, but be genuine, says Goldman. Dont tell the candidate to call you if you dont mean it.Compare Notes and Reach Consensus The post-interview evaluation is the time to compare notes and advance the hiring decision. Each interviewer should be prepared to back up remarks and recommendations with specific examples and notes from the interview.Deepen the Interview Questions as You Narrow the Field Subsequent interviews with finalists are valuable opportunities to learn more about them. Consider adding show-me exercises such as a strategic-planning exercise or a walk-me-through-what-youd-do activity involving a real business challenge the individual would be facing.Create a Positive Image for Your OrganizationJoan Woodward, assistant vice president at Fifth Third Bank, remarks that the job market is always competitive when looking for good people. We need to realize that were selling ourselves as much as candidates are trying to sell themselves, she says. Its important to treat people well during the interview process. I never want to lose a potential customer or cause a candidate to have a negative impression of our company.Your interview process reflects the value your company places on each candidate and, by extension, each employee. Be a good ambassador for your company by conducting a professional interview, communicating honestly and basing hiring decisions on an honest evaluation of each candidates capabilities. Not only will you make great hires, but youll build goodwill in the community and enhanc e your future recruiting efforts.
The Costs (and Benefits) of Employee Turnover
The Costs (and Benefits) of Employee Turnover The Costs (and Benefits) of Employee Turnover Smart businesses are concerned about turnover because turnover is expensive. There are several costs that arise when you need to replace an employee. High Cost of Employee Turnover Recruiting These can be high or low, depending on your organization and the level of the position. A grocery store that is constantly recruiting and hiring cashiers doesnt have a huge incremental cost to recruit one more person. But if youre looking for a Chief Information Officer- a highly specialized job- you may have to hire a headhunter, and that can cost you around one-third of the final annual salary. Thats a big chunk of change. Plus, all of the time spent reviewing resumes, interviewing candidates, and making the final decision are hours that your employees would otherwise spend working. Recruiting can cost a good deal of money. Training Some companies have set programs for training that you can easily quantify. This is common in entry-level positions. But higher level positions also have training costs, even if these are not formalized. Just the time spent getting all the computer equipment set up, passwords procured, orientation completed, and the numerous hours of asking and answering questions are all wrapped up in training costs. Time to Get Up to Speed In a lot of jobs, we figure it takes you six months to become fully functional. Each company is different, so even if you have tons of experience as an accountant, you still need to learn all the historical information about your new company before you are completely competent. As a result, youre not as productive in a new job as you would have been in your old job. When Turnover Is Good for Your Business Does this mean that turnover is always bad and you should try to retain your employees no matter what? No. A certain percentage of voluntary turnover is, in fact, good and can benefit a business. What kind of turnover is good? The quick answer to this question is: if the new person can bring enough added value to outweigh the costs of recruiting, training, and getting up to speed then the former employee leaving is a positive outcome. Here are examples of when turnover is good for your business. Bad Employees Lets face it; not all employee problems are caused by management. There are some bad employees out there. Have you ever worked with a complete slacker? What about an employee who loved to steal credit and slander her coworkers whenever possible? What about a gossip who couldnt keep his mouth shut? When one of these people quits, the heavens should rejoice. This voluntary termination has just saved the company the hassle of implementing a performance improvement plan, providing coaching, and doing damage control for all the problems the bad employee caused. Additionally, you have the truly bad employees- the ones who steal, sexually harass, are completely unreliable, or use foul language in the presence of customers. These people have to go, so its cheaper and easier if the person resigns than if you have to go through your companys termination procedures. (Even though all states except Montana are at-will states and you can fire people legally with no documentation, in practice, almost all companies follow specific, progressive discipline programs.) Miserable Employees Sometimes you have an employee who does a good job, so you cant fault that, but he seems miserable. Its not that hes underpaid or overworked, its just that he isnt happy with this job. When youre happy in your job, youll not only do better work but influence others positively as well. Conversely, one bad apple really can spoil the barrel. When an employee is miserable, its a great day when that person moves on. People With No Good Ideas When you are hired for a job, you often come in with great new ideas. However, if you dont work really hard at it, its easy to slip into the weve always done it this way mode. This can mean a company can lack innovation. It doesnt have to be this way. Some people change and grow with the position, always coming up with the best practices and creative ways to solve problems. But some people dont. Your business can stagnate if you dont have any new ideas. Sometimes its nice when an employee quits so that you can bring on an employee with new, fresh ideas. Dont Panic When an Employee Quits Having an employee resign can sometimes feel like a punch to the gut. Sometimes, it is really bad for your business. Youll suffer not only in turnover costs but in the lost potential that your former employee had. Its always worth spending time in self-reflection to figure out if you could have done anything differently. For instance, a voluntary quit is a reminder to double-check that your salaries are at market rate and ensure your policies and practices encourage a great workforce. But its also a time to evaluate if the quit is a blessing in disguise. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

When Sound Meets Sand
When Sound Meets Sand When Sound Meets Sand When Sound Meets Sand What is the sound of sand? Is it a gentle shift when lapped by waves? The wet splat of a castle foundation in the making? Or is it a controlled 200 megahertz, operating as an oscillator in a laptop? Nicholas Fang, professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, and his colleagues, have shown that, when tiny enough, and packed tightly enough, the acoustic properties of sand will soon change the high-tech soundscape. Fang was in the vicinity of Manchester by the Sea, outside of Boston, when he received a missive from a student urging him to visit the nearby shore. Because you are doing acoustics, you must go to the singing beach, where the sand makes sounds, it said. Fang and his group obeyed, and played. They slid their feet on the sand, jumped on the sand, rubbed the sand. And indeed, it sang (or squeaked, or barked). Some students recorded the granular output. Nicholas Boechler (now a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Washington) said, Hey, maybe this is a problem that happens across different sand scales, explains Fang. Trapping Sound Waves Post-holiday, the group threw themselves into solving that problem. We started to make a serious investigation into how to slow sound waves, how to trap a sound wave. They found that silicon grains of sand, a micron in diameter, would sing, to the tune of 200 megahertz. They covered a substrate with a single layer of tiny silicon spheres. When they excited the substrate with lasers, the resultant surface acoustic waves were slowed and controlled by the sand, by a factor of four to six. In essence, the coating proved itself as a potential oscillator. And with its ability to redirect sound, it could someday work to help mitigate blasts. Photograph of a two-dimensional array of microspheres adhered to a substrate. Image: Tian Gan / MIT.edu The trick resides not so much between the grains of sand as between the single layer of sand and the substrate. At the scale Fang and his lab are working at, the glue that binds stratum and substrate has a much larger effect than it does at larger scales. We need something that is adhesive but also elastic, says Fang. Thats not very easy. Fang managed to tie the two with Van der Waals forces. Its strong enough to provide a resonance frequency when the sound is traveling between the sphere and the substrate. That frequency is two orders of magnitude higher than that found in oscillators in current electronics. The frequency of the standing waves of those oscillators is determined by their size. To make the components any smaller, the sound has to be slowed. The sands ability to rein in sound waves means that the oscillators of the near future are likely to shrink to ten times their current size. Vibration at Nanoscale Long before Fangs frolic on the tuneful beach, researchers had theorized that such a sound-slowing layer of tiny particles was possible, even at the atomic level. In the 90s it was just a mathematical curiosity, says Fang. They knew this could work, but they only had the theory. They couldnt prove it, couldnt do an experiment like we do now. The shift from theoretical curio to applicable invention is owed in large part to recent techniques that measure tiny vibrations with light. This was not available back in the 90s, says Fang. Now we can use X-rays to do that. We hope to see vibration at the nanoscale in the future. The only hurdles to putting the coating on chips ASAP are practical ones. When printing large swaths of such a coating, its hard to keep things uniform. The perfect mosaic breaks down and finger-like patterns tend to emerge. But Fang and his colleagues are currently developing better ways to stitch together large, perfect layers of sand. Once thats been worked out, our thirst for ever-shrinking electronics may be momentarily slaked by the sandy surface. Michael Abrams is an independent writer. For Further Discussion In the 90s it was just a mathematical curiosity. They couldnât do an experiment like we do now.Prof. Nicolas Fang, MIT

Uncover the Candidates Communication Skills in the Interview
Uncover the Candidateâs Communication Skills in the Interview Uncover the Candidateâs Communication Skills in the Interview Uncover the Candidateâs Communication Skills in the Interview Conlan Business runs on communication. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers Job Outlook 2016 report, employers ranked verbal communication skills as most important for employees to have. So how do you assess these skills? Gauging a candidates communication skills is something that is measured from the initial contact to the last contact, says Jessica Meglio, senior recruiter at Turning the Corner, a Denver-based recruiting and career counseling firm. How quickly did they respond to the interview request? Did they provide a one-sentence answer or did they use a few sentences to express their interest and availability? These subtle interactions are very telling of how the candidate may communicate on the job. When its time to conduct the interview, heres how to get more details on the candidates communication skills. Compare Real Life to the Cover Letter Your candidate interactions have been fairly minimal to this point. So when you meet them for the first time, take a moment to assess the first impression they make. Are you surprised by how they communicate, or do you feel like youre getting what you expected? A persons voice or way of communicating should be similar, whether they are writing or speaking, says April Klimkiewicz, owner of Bliss Evolution, a career counseling agency based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A big red flag for me is when the voice in the cover letter sounds like a completely different person than the person interviewing for the position. If everything seems similar, however, thats a good sign. Observe How They Listen Communication is never one way; your candidate will need to be a good listener as well. Someone who struggles with communicating effectively will just answer whatever they think is being asked, without stopping to consider if they have it right or asking clarifying questions, says Stephanie Troiano, executive recruiter at HireTalent in Brea, California. Pay attention not just to the content of the answers that candidates provide, but whether that information actually answers the question you asked. A huge part of communication is actually listening, and if you find your candidate suddenly veering off with something irrelevant to the question you asked, thats a red flag, Troiano says. Ask Behavioral Questions about Communication Behavioral interview questions those that ask the candidate to provide examples of what theyve done in the past are a great way to get more information about how a person communicates. These sort of interview questions provide insight into a persons communication style, says Jana Tulloch, a human resources professional for DevelopIntelligence, a Boulder, Colorado-based company that provides customized technical learning solutions. Here are some sample behavioral questions: Tell me about a time when you had to communicate a difficult concept to someone and what challenges you encountered. Have you ever had to sell an unpopular idea? If so, what was the idea and how did you go about selling it? What was the most significant conflict you had with another employee? How did you resolve it? Tell me about a challenging customer that you had to handle. What was their concern and how did you address it? Again, listen to both the content of their answer as well as how they communicate that content. Do they tell their story in a clear and logical way, or do they dart off into different directions? Its about Role Playing Interview questions about hypothetical scenarios shed light on how a candidate might deal with sensitive topics or difficult situations they have to communicate, says Joe Campagna, owner of My Virtual HR Director consultants. As interviewer, create questions around scenarios that could conceivably happen at your company especially in the role the person is applying for and then evaluate how the candidate responds. Campagna gives the example of the question, Please demonstrate how you would tell a high-profile customer that their project was not going to make a deadline. Answers that are straightforward and clear show the candidate can communicate; an answer that hedges or makes excuses might be an indication that the candidate shies away from difficult discussions.

How to Hire Quickly and Make the Right Choice
How to Hire Quickly and Make the Right Choice How to Hire Quickly and Make the Right Choice How to Hire Quickly and Make the Right Choice Conlan For growing companies, fast growth can be exciting, but it also comes with risk. You dont have much time to agonize over every new hire. And yet, bringing in the wrong people could send your growing company into a tailspin. You need to set realistic timelines and follow a hiring process, says Matt Doucette, director of global talent acquisition at Worldwide. Heres how to keep your hiring pipeline moving quickly when you need it most. Know What You Need Having a clear idea of what the new role entails and the needed competencies will be key to hiring quickly, Doucette says. Instead of focusing on the job description, identify some key metrics: Define the mission of the role Identify the objectives the role should achieve Clarify these annually and quarterly Determine what core skills are required to make that happen This homework will give you a much clearer picture of what youre looking for in a new candidate, Doucette says. From a sourcing perspective, it will also help generate better information for keywords. When you know what youre looking for, its easier to find, he says. In addition, advanced search technology such as Power Resume Search is built around semantic searches for synonyms of these competencies and objectives, creating richer results than simple Boolean searches for lists of job skills. Dont Compromise on Values and Culture Hiring someone whos a bad fit can be worse than not making a hire at all.The best way to avoid a bad hire is to align the process with your companys values. Hiring people with values that mirror your companys culture is crucial, says Laura Yip, co-founder and chief people officer at Storm8, a mobile game network based in Redwood Shores, California. If your companys success relies on its company culture, avoid risking it just to fill a position, she says. Focusing on your company culture in the interview can also uncover the candidates style of work. At Storm8, we look for candidates who thrive in an entrepreneurial environment, Yip says. If they require a ton of hand-holding, it probably isnt a good fit. Interview in a Group Having several people participate in one interview saves time it also can provide multiple perspectives to the same answer, says Scott Wintrip, founder of Wintrip Consulting Group in St. Petersburg, Florida, and author of the upcoming book, High Velocity Hiring: How to Hire Top Talent in an Instant. There are limits to our perception; you tend to miss things that arent your expertise or are unexpected, he says. In a hiring environment, this can mean missing small cues that a candidate might not be the best choice if only one person is in on the interview. In addition, panel interviews can help avert decisions based on emotion, Wintrip says. The moment we become comfortable with a candidate, we stop asking some of the questions we had planned on, he says. Group interviews arent a new idea, but if you put four people in a room with the candidate, it can give you differing perspectives that can help you reach a faster, better decision. Look Twice for Red Flags If youre moving fast, you may be tempted to cut corners in your interview process. That can leave out important steps or worse, make you ignore a nagging feeling that something is a little off. When that happens, youre more likely to make the wrong choice. Do your reference checks and listen closely for concerns and red flags, says Mikaela Kiner, founder and CEO of UniquelyHR, an HR consultancy in Seattle. In the post-interview debriefing with other team members, spending a little extra time talking about why the person might not be a good hire. Ask everyone to answer the question If this person doesnt work out, why would that happen? Kiner says.

How to Choose the Best Job Offer, Part I
How to Choose the Best Job Offer, Part I How to Choose the Best Job Offer, Part I How to Choose the Best Job Offer, Part I Wahoo! You got an offer! Your job search and interviewing strategies paid off. But wait ... what's that? You have two offers? Three? Holy cow! If this is the boat you're in, consider yourself lucky. While getting even one offer is great news, having more than one gives you a safety net, increases your negotiating power, and raises your sense of control over your future. You get to choose which deal is the sweetest, and ask for more of what you want if one offer isn't good enough to win you over. To give you an idea of how you can sort out the details, I've created a handy chart to compare the terms of two hypothetical job offers. Offer #1 Offer #2 Personal Notes Wage / Salary $42,000/year $46,000/year Bonuses / Raises Merit increase probable after annual performance review Merit increase probable after annual performance review Paid Time Off 2 weeks' vacation, 5 sick days, 11 paid holidays 2 weeks' vacation, no set number of sick days, 7 paid holidays Insurance Health, life, dental, vision, prescription, reimbursement account Health, dental, vision, prescription, long- and short-term disability Need life insurance to protect family 401(k) Contributions Enroll after 6 months, company match up to 6% Enroll after 90 days, company match up to 3% Tuition Reimbursement N/A N/A Stock Options Available after one year N/A (Non-public company) Relocation N/A N/A Commute 25 minutes to downtown 35 minutes to small town Potential for heavy morning traffic downtown - could take subway Opportunity for Advancement Title change flexibility only, unless higher position opens Non-hierarchical structure but ability to move within departments Level of Independence Mainly independent, report directly to manager Report to senior level, who reports to manager Closer supervision with #2, not sure I'd like that Cost of Living Manageable Manageable Would be more comfortable with higher salary for higher 401(k) contributions But don't stop there. Other important factors to consider include: Hours, work environment, boss and coworkers, job security, training and career development, and work-related travel, if any. So now that you've mapped out the differences, how do you determine what the best fit is for you? Identify Level of Importance Is a higher salary more important than life insurance? Is a longer commute to a small town that big of a deal? Is moving up the corporate ladder more important than lateral transitions? Identify Most Attractive Offer Overall Which offer, before any negotiating, meets most of your needs? Identify Areas of Negotiation Let's say you consider Offer #2 more attractive overall, but you could really use employer-paid life insurance and would prefer more paid time off. With another offer to fall back on, you have the upper hand in negotiations and if the company really wants you, they just might step up to meet your needs. In the end, your decision may come down to something as simple as which offer feels right. Think it through, weigh the pros and cons, and trust your gut. When you've made your choice, follow up with How to Choose the Best Offer: Part II, in which I address how to reject an offer without burning bridges.

An Historical Resume Looks to the Future
An Historical Resume Looks to the Future An Historical Resume Looks to the Future Revamping a sales-focused resume for a career changeThis monthâs âDoes Your Resume Stink?â contest winner is a sales professional who wants to steer her career away from sales jobs and towards marketing and brand management jobs. Yet her original resume still emphasized her sales skills over her marketing prowess. It needed a near-complete overhaul to show how her skills were transferable and that she could confidently make the career change.Every resume has a strategy for the content, the design and the organization. The old resume had been created with a more historical view in mind. So we built the new resume around the new career goal, always looking to the desired career path, not just her work history. It is always important to have the goal in mind when creating a resume because the information that builds that story should be highlighted.Promote desired responsibilitiesWe created a core competencies section, following a professional summary up top, to pull in industry-s pecific keywords that relate to marketing and brand management. This will promote how frequently the resume shows up in recruitersâ searches. Recruiters will conduct Boolean searches for strings of keywords, and we want to catch as many as possible - not only in the core competencies section but also within the entire content of the resume. For example: The job seeker is targeting larger companies, so we inserted the keyword phrase âFortune 500.â It was easily done by creating company descriptions for her two previous employers. Both had been Fortune 500 companies and by mentioning that, we would be sure to catch searches where recruiters were searching for candidates with Fortune 500 experience.Showcase progressive careerIn the original resume, the experience with a large automotive manufacturer was fragmented; each job had been listed separately with the company name being repeated. At first glance, it appeared that the job seeker had hopped around to different jobs. It was o nly upon a second, closer reading that the long tenure with that company became apparent. We leveraged that by changing the structure and only listing the company name once at the beginning. With this organizational scheme, it became easily apparent that she had enjoyed a progressive career.Additionally, we changed up the format used to feature dates. The old resume had dates written in month/year format. We shifted to a âyears onlyâ format which not only further emphasized her tenure but eliminated the fragmented appearance. During our information-gathering process, we also discovered there were many details about her work and accomplishments that never made it into the old resume. By bolstering the new resume with marketing-relevant specifics like development of programs and events, the hands-on experience would stand out.The new resume should be a powerful tool for her achievement of her goal of a management position in marketing and brand development.

Taleo 4 Ways the Most Popular ATS Ranks Your Job Application
Taleo 4 Ways the Most Popular ATS Ranks Your Job Application Taleo 4 Ways the Most Popular ATS Ranks Your Job Application Virtually all large employers utilize anapplicant tracking system(ATS) to manage their simultaneous job openings and high volumes of applicants. These systems make it possible for recruiters and hiring managers to comb through hundreds or thousands of applicants, but theyre not without their drawbacks.Resumes and applications that arent optimized for these systems might never see the light of day in what many job seekers call the resume black hole. Read more: What is an applicant tracking system? If youre on a job hunt, one ATS you have probably encountered (whether you realize it or not) is Taleo. What is Taleo? Taleo is the most used applicant tracking system today with adominant 30%market share among Fortune 500 companies. Owned by Oracle, Taleo doesmore than simply organize inbound job applicants. Human resource representatives can use Taleo to track communication with applicants, onboard new hires, generate reports, and much more. The system is highly customizable to a companys needs, meaning any two companies could be relying on a completely different set of features. Companies that Use Taleo A few of the many companies that use Taleo include: Starbucks Nike Marriott Nintendo Tesla Kaiser Permanente Nordstrom Boeing Walgreens HP US Bank United Airlines Deloitte American Express Siemens Dell Toyota Intel Citi ATT Visa American Airlines Johnson Johnson Intuit You can often spot the specific ATS a company is using by looking at the URL of the job application. For example, a Starbucks job listing has a URL that looks like this: starbucks.taleo.net/careersection/1000222/jobsearch.ftl?lang=enLOCATION=200000194CATEGORY=200000027src=CWS-11700 4 Ways Taleo Ranks and Filters Applicants There are a number of ways that Taleo could reject or breeze past your application depending on how a recruiter chooses to use the tool. If youre applying for a job through Taleo, keep these in mind. 1. Tiered Scoring for Knockout Questions Knockout questions are commonly incorporated into online job applications. They are typically pass/fail and allow recruiters to automatically screen out applicants who dont meet basic requirements. For example: Do you have a valid drivers license? or Are you willing to work weekends? Taleo takes knockout questions beyond pass/fail by allowing recruiters to designate more than two examples and assign point values to the answers. In this example, the recruiter is asking,How many years of research and management experience do you possess? They can then enter different experience ranges and assign each a score. This recruiter is most interested in candidates with 3-6 years of experience as illustrated by the corresponding score. Additionally, the buttons on the right allow the recruiter to highlight or knockout candidates based on certain answers. Applicants answer a series of these questions and, if not rejected outright, earn a score that is compared to the other applicants. 2. Bonus Points for Certain Resume Keywords Similarly, point tiers and knockouts can also be assigned to specific keywords within the ATS resume and application itself. For example, a recruiter can set up Taleo to assign a 15-point bonus to an applicant that mentions one of the skills in the nice to haves section of the job description. 3. Automatic Resume Scoring Even if a recruiter opts not to manually assign extra points to certain keywords, Taleo automatically scores applications and resumes based on their contents in what they call Req Rank. Taleo parses the text from your resume and application then compares it to the job description. Recruiters can filter out applicants that dont score above a certain threshold. Naturally, theyre more likely to consider applicants that jump to the top of the ranking. Because of features like these last two, its critical for you to tailor your ATS resume to the job description and home in on the most important resume keywords. One way to do this is by analyzing the job description for key skills and phrases that are emphasized or repeated. Jobscan was built to mimic the scoring algorithms found in Taleo and other top ATS. You can get an instant analysis of how your resume keywords stack up against the job listing by pasting them in below. span data-mce-type=bookmark style=display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0; class=mce_SELRES_start?/spanspan data-mce-type=bookmark style=display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0; class=mce_SELRES_start?/spanspan data-mce-type=bookmark style=display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0; class=mce_SELRES_start?/spanspan data-mce-type=bookmark style=display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0; class=mce_SELRES_startspan data-mce-type=bookmark style=display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0; class=mce_SELRES_start?/span?/span 4. Boolean Searches Recruiters can search their applicant pool within Taleo for specific skills and keywords, or even craft complex Boolean searches with âand,â âor,â and ânotâ operators (among other modifiers) to fine tune their results. You should hope that the recruiter is using a robust Boolean string because Taleos search is not very intelligent on its own.It cannot differentiate between the searched term and common variants based on tense, plurals, abbreviations, acronyms, etc. For example, a search for project manager wont return results containing only project management, nor would a search for Certified Public Accountant return results containing only CPA. Because of this, its important to try and mirror the language found in the job description. If a recruiter or hiring manager used a specific form of a keyword while writing the job description, its a reasonable assumption that theyll use the same version of the word to search their applicant database. If you have room on your resume, try using both forms of the keyword just in case. For example, Master of Business Administration (MBA). Amy Schumer was mom shamed for going back to work after 2 weeks and she had the perfect response
Amy Schumer was mom shamed for going back to work after 2 weeks and she had the perfect response Amy Schumer was mom shamed for going back to work after 2 weeks and she had the perfect response You can say a lot about Amy Schumer but one thing you cannot say is that she isnât a hard-working person. She has starred in and produced a film every year since her star-making turn in 2016âs Trainwreck, won several awards for her show Inside Amy Schumer (which she also wrote and produced), and has continued to do standup regularly (as well as multiple comedy specials including 2019âs Growing.)And on May 5 she gave birth to her first child, Gene Attell Fischer, with husband Chris Fischer. But giving birth didnât stop her from returning to her old stomping ground, The Comedy Cellar, for a Monday night standup slot. She was proud of the big moment so she shared it on Instagram with the caption, âIâm back.âFollow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! And as you may have guessed, the internet had some opinions about it. âUgh why are you working so soon?!â one commenter w rote. Another said, âAlready???? Thatâs insane!!! And inhumane. Contract or not you need to be allowed at least 6 weeks for maternity.â Someone else observed, âIâm sorry. What?! Didnât you birth a human like 5 minutes ago?âHowever, people should know better than to mess with a comedian, much less Schumer who is the queen of witty comebacks. First of all, she said, âIâve always wanted to be mom shamed!!!!â she wrote.Schumer also had some supportive fans who called her a ârock starâ and âwarriorâ for getting right back up there. âYou canât keep a good woman down!â one wrote to which she responded, âOh no, you canât.â Another wrote, âThis just in: Woman gives birth, then within weeks leaves the house and stands up for 30 mins. surrounded by friends making people laugh. The horror. Call CPS.âBut perhaps the best response was when journalist Jessica Yellin wrote, âI can only imagine what a pump room looks like at a comedy club. Welcome back , #rockstar.â To which Schumer replied, âEvery room is a pump room if you put your mind to it.âThe state of maternity leave in the US is quite poor considering we are one of the only countries in the world to have no actual legislation to mandate paid maternity leave. Plus, a 2016 University of Minnesota study found that 60% of women reported that they do not have access to space at their place of employment as well as sufficient time for their pumping needs.Schumer does not have a conventional career where she works for one employer and is held to certain constraints but if she wants to return to work after two weeks she is absolutely allowed to and should not be penalized for it. Nor should someone who takes their entire maternity leave before returning to work be penalized but alas the internet never seems to be happy with anything. You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines Time for a Comeback
Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines Time for a Comeback Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines Time for a Comeback Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines: Time for a Comeback? Invented prior to World War II, the vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) had some appealing features: the vertical orientation accepted wind from any direction and the heavy generator and gearbox equipment rested on the ground instead of on the tower (much easier to access). However, compared to advances in horizontal-axis wind turbines, VAWT disadvantages included the longer total blade length per swept area, cyclic loading, structural resonance, lack of aerodynamic braking, and higher operating costs. As horizontal-axis wind turbine (HAWT) technologies continued to improve and rotor costs dropped, the HAWT became the dominant technology for land-based wind systems, especially over the last two decades. Although they are not the frontrunner for 5-MW-10-MW land-based systems, VAWTs may be the favored technology for larger offshore systems in the 10-MW-20-MW scale, where the vertical-axis rotor architecture offers potentially large reductions in cost of energy (COE) for operations and maintenance, substructure, installation, and infrastructure. Evaluating Feasibility This idea is currently being tested at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, where a research team is evaluating the feasibility of VAWT architecture for large-scale deployment in the offshore environment. The goal is to reduce the biggest barrier to offshore wind developmenthigh COEby 20% or more through the application of VAWT rotor technology. The research project will: Develop innovative VAWT rotor designs that result in cost-effective and easily manufactured rotors for deep-water offshore machines Demonstrate the potential for greater than 20%t reduction in COE for deep-water, floating VAWT systems Develop specialized manufacturing techniques, certification test methods, and a commercialization plan for offshore VAWT rotors Test, in a wind tunnel and combined wind-wave tank, a proof-of-concept subscale, deep-water floating offshore wind-turbine generator employing a VAWT rotor Sandia National Laboratories is undertaking a project to test the feasibility of vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) architecture for large-scale deployment in the offshore environment. Image: Sandia National Laboratories Modeling suggests the COE reduction opportunities follow from three fundamental characteristics of the VAWT: lower turbine center of gravity, reduced machine complexity, and the opportunity for scaling the machine to the 10-MW-20-MW size, says Matthew Barone, one of the projects lead researchers in Sandias Wind Water Power Technologies Department. Several rotor architecture concepts that incorporate unique VAWT load-alleviation and braking strategies will be considered, especially for curved-bladed Darrieus rotors and lightweight, towerless V- or U-shaped rotors. A rotor optimized for increased energy capture, as well as airfoils optimized for use with load-alleviation concepts, will also be tested. Design Requirements The most original and innovative aspect of this work will be the suite of rotor design solutions we are developing that simultaneously address the need for reliable aerodynamic braking, while also smoothing out power and torque oscillations associated with VAWTs, says Barone. By addressing these design requirements through rotor innovations, we hope to retain the VAWTs inherent advantage of simplicity of design, while improving its overall cost-effectiveness in the offshore environment. The ultimate VAWT rotor design may also create manufacturing challenges. The complexity and scale of a 10-MW-20-MW VAWT blade structure, along with significant differences in blade loading, may require specialized manufacturing processes. Researchers will also identify the best materials, coatings, and manufacturing options for the VAWT rotors. Total estimated reduction in COE from the baseline work is 28%. The most important COE reduction categories are the increased annual energy production and reduced operations and maintenance, support structure, and balance-of-system costs. These reductions more than offset the increase in blade costs due to the longer VAWT blades. Deep-water deployment in a larger wind resource also plays an important role, accounting for 32% of the COE reduction due to increased energy capture. However, calculations were also performed for the HAWT baseline in the deep-water wind resource, and COE reduction for the VAWT concept relative to the revised baseline is still 21%. The greatest challenge of this project is combining past successes in VAWT design with new innovations that will result in dramatically improved machines for offshore, says Barone. This type of research runs counter to the usual incremental nature of wind turbine innovation. We feel, however, that the challenges presented by offshore wind demand new approaches. For deepwater applications at the 10MW-20-MW scale, the VAWT architecture is potentially a transformational technologysomething that may be necessary for large-scale offshore wind development in the U.S. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. The greatest challenge of this project is combining past successes in VAWT design with new innovations that will result in dramatically improved machines for offshore.Matthew Barone, lead researcher, Sandia's Wind & Water Power Technologies Department
